At age 10, she started performing professionally, appearing on local television and radio shows in Knoxville. Parton made her Grand Ole Opry debut three years later. Set on a career in music, she then moved to Nashville after finishing high school.

As a Singer– In Nashville Parton became the protégée of country music singer and Grand Ole Opry star Porter Wagoner. Through repeated appearances on Wagoner’s syndicated television show, Parton gained coast-to-coast recognition.

She soon attracted the attention of the music industry moguls at RCA Records and subsequently recorded more than a dozen hit songs—together with Wagoner—on the RCA label. Owing much to her association with Wagoner, Parton rapidly emerged as one of country music’s most popular singers.

As a Pop transition- In 1974 Parton discontinued her work with Wagoner to launch a solo career, in which she enjoyed immediate success: in both 1975 and ’76 she was chosen female singer of the year by the Country Music Association (CMA) on the strength of such songs as “Jolene” and “Love Is Like a Butterfly” (both 1974). About the same time, Parton began to cross over to the pop music market.

Country and bluegrass period- In 1977, she released her first crossover number ‘Here You Come Again’ which topped both Pop and Country Music charts. She received her first Grammy Award for this performance in 1978.

Dolly Parton and Jane Fonda’s iconic friendship started with the groundbreaking 1980 film 9 to 5 (also starring Lily Tomlin), and they went on to remain close, even appearing on-screen together in the final season of Netflix’s Grace and Frankie.

Beginning 1999 she recorded a series of albums inspired by Bluegrass music – a type of American country music. She made four albums ‘The Grass is Blue’, ‘Little Sparrow’, ‘Halos & Horns’ and ‘Those Were the Days’.

In 2005, she also wrote the song ‘Travelin’ Thru’ for the feature film ‘Transamerica’ for which she was nominated for an Academy Award that year.

Since then she has been active through appearances on musical shows, releasing her own song collection and so on. In 2013, she collaborated with Kenny Rogers for a musical album ‘You Can’t Make Old Friends’.

“When I meet someone, I look at their eyes and their smile and seek out the good first – it’s easy to find when you’re looking for it. You let a person shine with their own light and try to connect it to yours. As soon as I say hello, I go right to that light and I don’t care who you are! I know we’re all pieces of the same thing – I go for that common light because I know it’s in all of us.” – Dolly Parton

“I’m the kind of person who would rather rock in my rocking chair when I’m old and regret a few things that I did than to sit there and regret that I never tried.” – Dolly Parton
